Langley filmmaker Richard Hill (47) is launching his own video production company and has just completed his first corporate production for a client based in Australia!

Richard, a former feature writer for the Observer and who won the Mayor’s ‘Individual Artist of the Year’ award earlier this year was commissioned to make a promotional video for a manufacturing company based in Adelaide, Australia.

Richard’s company, DannyDog Productions was commissioned by the company to make a short promotional production about a portable wheelchair ramp made by the company.

“DannyDog Productions was recommended to us by one of our Company Directors and we were able to view examples of your previous work via the Internet.” said Robert Hunter, General Manager of the Allan Smith & Associates, the Australia based company that manufactures the ramp said, “We have been most impressed by the speed and efficiency with which the work has been carried out and by the high standard of quality shown in the video film clip that is to be featured on our company website. It is hoped that once our website is launched on the Internet, we will be able to reach a far greater sales market for our unique and innovative product.”

Despite living with heart disease, having had three heart attacks and two heart bypass operations, Richard remains ambitious. He has just completed an HNC course in factual programme making at Uxbridge College. The college's media section manager. Michael Keenan, said: "Richard has shown that even people with a fair amount of experience can progress faster by taking a structured course run by professionals. We wish him well in his new business venture." Richard completed the course two weeks ago having gained an overall distinction.

“Factual programme making is a time consuming process” said Richard, “Most of the work is done in pre-production and post-production, the side that most people don’t see. An enormous amount of work went into preparing for the recording which we shot last Saturday in Langley, but the rewards once the production is finally complete are enormous.”

Earlier this year, he also contributed to the ITV drama series ‘The Royal’ when he advised the production team on the proper use of an iron lung for scenes for the final two episodes.

In the meantime, Richard is working on other commissions which include a production for ‘The London Sleep Clinic’ in Harley Street, London and a production for ‘Refresh’, a charity which runs a hotel for people with disabilities in Southampton. He is also hoping to make a documentary showing the past, present and potential of Slough.

“I owe much of my success to the Arts Development Team at Slough Borough Council” said Richard, “They, and ‘Creative Partnerships - Slough’ have been enormously supportive in enabling me to pursue my ambitions, particularly as it’s so much harder to break into the media industry with a disability such as heart disease”

Writer and award winning film maker Richard Hill is setting up his own company to produce factual documentaries for TV after successfully completing a media course at Uxbridge College.

Mr Hill (47) of Langley, Slough, was faced with carving out a new career after suffering three heart attacks and undergoing heart by-pass surgery seven years ago.

He said: "I discovered I had a talent for writing and I have been published in over twenty lifestyle magazines. Then, four years ago, I was approached by Carlton TV to research a documentary on canals in the Midlands.

"I then won a grant from a West London charity to made a community film, which was premiered at the Curzon Cinema in London. It went on from there and I began making my own films in the Slough area, which featured introductions by Prunella Scales and Timothy West.

"Last year I decided I wanted to improve my skills and learn more about production and direction and found the course at Uxbridge College. It has enabled me not only to gain new skills, but to realise that I could make a living from film making.

"The course is brilliant. Most of the teachers are also working in the industry and they are very supportive and encouraging."

Mr Hill is setting up his company, DannyDog Productions, in July after finishing his one year Higher National Certificate Moving Image (Factual) course.

In the meantime he hit the headlines by winning the Mayor of Slough's Award for Individual Artiste of the Year in the town's art and media awards. He has also received a grant from the southern region of the Arts Council to continue his work in encouraging young people to work in the arts field.

The college's media section manager. Michael Keenan, said: "Our media and design courses cover video and radio production and are attracting students of all ages, with excellent results.

"Richard has shown that even people with a fair amount of experience can progress faster by taking a structured course run by professionals. We wish him well in his new business venture."
